Have Your Say:

Broxbourne Residents Invited to Shape Future of Local Government in Hertfordshire

Broxbourne, Herts, September 4, 2025
Broxbourne residents are being urged to get involved in one of the most significant shake ups of local government in decades as Hertfordshire’s councils launch a new wave of public engagement.

As part of a government backed plan to simplify local government structures across England, all 11 Hertfordshire councils including Broxbourne Borough Council are working together to explore the creation of new unitary councils. These would replace the current two tier system of county and district or borough councils.

Currently, Hertfordshire operates with two separate layers of government. District and borough councils are responsible for services like bin collection, housing, and planning, while Hertfordshire County Council manages highways, education, and social care. The proposed changes aim to consolidate these services under single tier authorities to improve efficiency, accessibility, and cost effectiveness.

Local leaders say the changes could mark the biggest transformation in governance in over 50 years.

This is one of the biggest changes to local government in the last 50 years,” said Cllr Corina Gander, Leader of Broxbourne Council. “It is important that residents have the opportunity to hear more about what is happening and share their views on what they think works well and what we can improve.”

To ensure residents’ voices are heard, the council is hosting a series of engagement events across the county. For Broxbourne, two key events have been scheduled:

In person event: Wednesday, 17 September, 6 to 7.30pm at the Council Offices in Churchgate, Cheshunt. Register here

Online event: Thursday, 18 September, 6 to 7.30pm. Register here

In addition, a dedicated website www.hertfordshire-lgr.co.uk offers residents detailed information about the proposed changes and a platform to submit feedback until 30 September 2025.

After this consultation period, feedback from across the county will be reviewed ahead of a final proposal submission to central government in November.

Broxbourne Council is encouraging all residents, businesses, and community groups to attend and take part in shaping the future of public services in Hertfordshire.
