Good Morning {{first_name | Reader}},
You’ve probably noticed the giant poppies now adorning our street lamps — a sure sign that Remembrance Sunday is almost here. Next Sunday, 9 November, the borough will come together for marches and commemorations to honour those who gave their lives in service.
As we remember them, let’s also spare a thought for those affected by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, where many have lost lives, homes, and livelihoods. If you know of any local collections or donation drives supporting relief efforts, please let us know so we can share them with our readers.
We’ve also extended nominations for the Broxtown Community Champions Awards by one more week. If you know someone making a real difference in our community, nominate them today. Local businesses interested in sponsoring the Gala Night can get in touch — and if you haven’t grabbed your early bird tickets yet, now’s the time!
There’s plenty of news to catch up on this week, and we promise it’s all worth your scroll.

Hertfordshire County Council Launches Budget Survey for 2026/27
Hertfordshire County Council has opened a public survey asking residents to help shape its £1.2 billion budget for 2026/27. The consultation, running until 7 December, invites the county's 1.2 million residents to prioritise spending across services and suggest cost-saving measures.
The council faces potential losses of £50 million annually due to the Government's Fair Funding Review, adding pressure to already stretched resources. Adults and children's social care currently accounts for 68 percent of spending. Since 2010, the authority has achieved £495 million in savings.
Council Leader Steve Jarvis emphasised the importance of resident input in making difficult budget decisions during uncertain financial times.

County Unveils Transformative SEND Strategy After Damning Inspection

Hertfordshire County Council has published its draft SEND strategy for 2026-29, nearly two years after inspectors found "widespread and systemic failings." The plan promises transformative change with six "outcome bees": Be Included, Independent, Ambitious, Safe, Healthy, and Resilient. Major improvements show 89% of education health and care plans now issued on time versus 38% in July 2023, while quality ratings soared from 5% to 66% "good" or "outstanding." Developed with NHS partners, 524 schools, and 531 parent survey responses, the strategy prioritizes early intervention and collaboration. It will be discussed Thursday (6 November) before public consultation and April 2026 finalisation.

Community Honours American Heroes at 81st Anniversary of Liberator Memorial

Community leaders, councillors, and residents gathered outside St Mary's School in Cheshunt to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Liberator Memorial. The ceremony honoured 10 American servicemen who died when their Liberator bomber crashed on 12 August 1944. Returning from a European mission, the crew deliberately steered the failing aircraft into an open field, avoiding the populated area in a selfless act of courage. Attendees laid wreaths and reflected on the servicemen's ultimate sacrifice. The memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery that shaped history, with the crash site now a permanent tribute to those who gave everything for freedom during World War II.

Conservative Councillor Cleared of Bullying Allegations After Party Investigation
A Conservative party disciplinary panel has dismissed bullying complaints against Broxbourne councillor Alexander Curtis, expelled from his party's council group this summer. The panel, chaired by former minister Michael Tomlinson, investigated seven allegations but concluded findings didn't "amount to bullying or harassment." While suggesting Curtis should use "a more respectful tone," the panel found conduct didn't fall "below minimum standards expected." Councillor Curtis stated the investigation "cleared me on every single ground." He continues serving as Conservative councillor on Broxbourne Borough and Hertfordshire County councils, though listed as 'Conservative (Unaligned).' Council leader Corina Gander declined further comment.
Broxbourne MP Highlights October Activities in Parliament and Constituency
Lewis Cocking, MP Broxbourne
The Member of Parliament for Broxbourne has summarised his work during October, which included parliamentary debates and local engagements.
In Parliament, he raised concerns about property service charges affecting leaseholders on the Whitefields Estate in Cheshunt, criticising Labour-run Enfield Council's management. He also opposed Labour's Digital ID proposals and voted for a Bill calling for the UK to leave the European Convention on Human Rights.
Locally, the MP visited Dewhurst St Mary Primary School and conducted telephone surgeries, addressing constituent concerns about the SEND system and challenges facing small businesses. He encouraged residents to sign a petition against Digital ID legislation.

Former council leader Cllr. Mark Mills-Bishop shared powerful wartime stories connected to Broxbourne during a gathering at the Halsey Masonic Hall on Saturday.
Members of the British Royal Legion and Masonic Lodge, along with the mayor, enjoyed tea following a wreath-laying ceremony at St Mary's School in Cheshunt.
Cllr. Mills-Bishop recounted the tragedy of 10 American servicemen who died when their Liberator bomber crashed in the borough on 12 August 1944. He also shared the story of the Broxbourne Martyrs, who were killed for their religious beliefs.

The former council leader revealed that numerous other local wartime stories remain untold, including accounts of Broxbourne residents captured during conflicts.
Cllr. Mills-Bishop will share these histories in a guest editorial column on Wednesday, ahead of Remembrance Sunday on 9 November, ensuring these important local sacrifices are remembered.
'Power for Good' - Anti-Bullying Week 10th – 14th November 2025

Research shows one in five schoolchildren are frequently bullied—six children per class of 30. Up to 44% of suicides among 10-14-year-olds may be bullying-related.
This year's theme, 'Power for Good', empowers individuals to use positive influence preventing bullying through speaking out and offering support.
Award-winning author M.G. Vaciago will present anti-bullying workshops in local schools. She advises parents to reassure children it's not their fault, maintain open communication, and keep detailed logs of incidents and school correspondence.
"Never be afraid to be an advocate for your child," says Vaciago. "If you don't, no-one else will."
CONFIRMED: McDonald's Coming to Brookfield Cheshunt - Video Evidence Proves Viral Rumours True

The viral social media speculation is over. Our reporters have confirmed with video evidence that McDonald's is opening in Brookfield Shopping Centre, Cheshunt.
The new restaurant, located near Card Factory and Poundland, has sparked mixed reactions. Many residents are excited about no longer travelling to Bullsmoor Lane or Waltham Abbey for their Big Mac fix. However, some expressed disappointment it won't be a drive-through location.
The development brings positive news for jobseekers, with McDonald's actively recruiting crew members for the new site. Local residents are encouraged to apply quickly for available positions.
Whether you're celebrating or wanted a drive-through, the Golden Arches are officially coming to Cheshunt.

HEALTH & WELLBEING TIPS
The Benefits of Weight Lifting for Women
Weight lifting offers numerous benefits for women beyond building muscle. Regular strength training increases bone density, reducing osteoporosis risk as women age. It boosts metabolism, helping with weight management even at rest.
Contrary to common myths, lifting weights does not create bulky physiques in women due to lower testosterone levels. Instead, it creates lean, toned muscles and improved body composition.
Additional benefits include enhanced mental health, increased confidence, better posture, and reduced injury risk in daily activities. Weight training also improves cardiovascular health and helps regulate blood sugar levels.
Women of all ages can benefit from incorporating strength training into their fitness routines. If you are still looking for the gym to sign up to, check out Be.Broxbourne
