Good Morning {{first_name | Reader}},
Good things rarely arrive in a straight line. Last night in London, Harry Kane became the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the Ballon d'Or. The Chingford lad waited a long time for his first trophy, and even longer for this one. A useful reminder that persistence pays off, even when it takes time.
Tomorrow the Chancellor delivers the Budget. Whatever is announced will affect Broxbourne households and businesses, and next week we will break down what it means for you.
It is half term, and after this morning's rain, the forecast looks brighter from tomorrow. Need ideas? There is a Halloween Extravaganza at Waltham Cross Library tomorrow, the free Cuffley Art Society exhibition on Saturday, and the poppy display at Cheshunt Old Pond.
Saturday is Halloween too. A lit pumpkin usually means trick or treaters are welcome, while a note on the door lets people know if you would rather not. With darker evenings, give children something bright to wear, a torch, and keep them close. And be kind to neighbours who choose not to take part.

🍽️ Broxtown Supperclub, Tuesday 3rd November

The next Broxtown Supper Club is on Tuesday 3 November, and we've opened more seats
We've opened up the Broxtown Supper Club so more residents can take a seat at the table with some of the people making a difference in Broxbourne, on Tuesday 3 November, 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Fishy Delishy, College Road, Cheshunt.
There are no talks or slides, just a shared supper and good conversation about community, personal brand, AI, small business and everything in between, with a menu from Fishy Delishy built to keep it flowing.
Places are deliberately limited and you never know who you'll be sitting next to, so reserve yours now.
🏛️ HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL
The PM wants every home ready for three days without help, and it is a short shopping list
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has advised households to keep enough tinned food and bottled water to get through three days of disruption, citing storms, cyberattacks and conflict as the kinds of events now happening more often. The government checklist suggests nine litres of water per person, non-perishable food, a wind-up or battery FM radio, a torch, spare batteries, a first aid kit, cash and any medicines, pet food or baby supplies your household needs. This is about being sensible, not panic buying, so if you add a few tins to each weekly shop you will be ready by Christmas without emptying the shelves for anyone else.
Your K-Cup Has Been Sitting in a Warehouse for Months
That grocery store pod? It was roasted long before it hit the shelf. Coffee starts losing flavor within weeks of roasting — which is why your morning cup tastes flat, no matter how nice your machine is.
Angelino's does it differently. A third-generation roaster in Los Angeles, they roast, grind, and seal every pod in-house for peak freshness, then ship it to your door within days of roasting. The difference is the first thing you'll notice: real aroma, real flavor, no bitterness.
Mix and match from 50+ specialty coffees, teas, and flavored blends — all Keurig®-compatible — and save more with every box you add, up to 34% off at 12+. Order once whenever you're running low, or subscribe for an extra 5% if that's easier. Entirely up to you.
New customers get 15% off their first order — applied automatically, no code needed.
COMMUNITY UPDATES
5,000 handmade poppies arrive at Cheshunt Old Pond this Saturday, and you can still add one

Around 5,000 knitted and crocheted poppies will fill the fountain at Cheshunt Old Pond from Saturday 31 October to Thursday 12 November, made by knitting groups, families and residents from across the borough and funded by the Cheshunt & District Royal British Legion Club. Remembrance Sunday parades take place in Cheshunt, Goffs Oak and Hoddesdon on Sunday 8 November, more than 6,700 people turned out for the three parades last year, and there are further poppy displays outside St Catherine and St Paul's Church and by the War Memorial in Hoddesdon. If you knit or crochet, you can still post poppies to the Cheshunt & District British Legion Club, 37 Crossbrook Street, Cheshunt EN8 8LR, and a Remembrance service follows in Cedars Park at 10.30am on Wednesday 11 November.
Broxbourne's postcode search is working again, so finish that form you gave up on

Gif by scaler_official on Giphy
For several days the council website's postcode lookup was down, which meant any online form that finds your address from your postcode could not be completed. The council's IT team has fixed it and the forms are working normally again. If you abandoned a report, application or request last week, now is the time to go back and submit it.
Broxbourne's MP wants the e-bike and e-scooter laws we already have enforced
Lewis Cocking MP says he is fed up with antisocial riding on e-bikes and e-scooters across Broxbourne and is calling for proper enforcement of existing laws rather than new ones. Riding a privately owned e-scooter on public roads and pavements is already illegal, and illegally modified e-bikes can be seized. If riding near you is dangerous, report it to Hertfordshire Constabulary online or on 101, because reports are what put patrols where the problem is.
Cedars Park volunteers built a shed, wrapped the beehives and need your help with a mystery plaque

The Cedars Park volunteers have had a busy few weeks: Matthew and Vince the Viking built a new metal shed with no instructions, John donated five bikes and scooters to the play box, and Marjorie made covers to keep two of the hives warm through winter, with thanks to beekeepers Pete Sugar, Has and Vince. They have found a plaque in the name of Joan and Len Thomas and would love to return it, so if you know the family, please get in touch with the Friends of Cedars Park. A safety note too: recent high winds have brought down high branches from a couple of trees, so take care on your walks.
The Shedders group is growing and welcomes anyone looking for company, including people going through a tough time with their mental health. Just pop over for a chat.
The old Nisa on Newnham Parade is coming back to life as Cheshunt Food Centre

If you have walked past Newnham Parade in Cheshunt lately, you will have seen the work moving fast at the old Nisa shop, which is being refurbished as a new store called Cheshunt Food Centre. An empty unit filling up again is good news for the whole parade, bringing more footfall for its neighbours and another option on your doorstep for everyday shopping. We will be bringing you the full story on the new shop in a special editorial soon, so watch this space.
Waltham Cross funfair moved because of the weather, but the town centre is open

Giphy
The funfair planned for Waltham Cross town centre was postponed because of the weather and is expected to run next weekend instead. Shops in the town centre are open as normal in the meantime.
What else has been postponed due to rough weather this week?
Hoddesdon's Father Christmas parade is on Sunday 29 November, and it leaves at 4.45pm sharp

The Hertfordshire Showband will lead the Father Christmas Parade through Hoddesdon once again, a job the band has done for more than ten years. The procession of floats leaves Elsie House, between Hoddesdon town centre and Broxbourne, at 4.45pm sharp, heads through town to Morrisons and then down Brewery Road to Sainsbury's. Put it in the diary now and get there early for a good spot.
⭐ BROXTOWN SPOTLIGHT
Waltham Cross has a new favourite face, and you will find him on duty at the Pavilions

If your social feeds have felt a little brighter lately, you have probably already met him: the security guard at the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Waltham Cross whose videos have been doing the rounds and putting smiles on faces across the borough. We do not know his name yet, and for now we are happy to keep you guessing. Next time you are at the Pavilions, say hello and let him know Broxtown readers have been watching, then tell us his name and we may just bring you the full story.
Free session in Cheshunt next Tuesday shows local businesses what AI can do for them

If you run a small business or charity in Broxbourne and keep hearing about AI without knowing where to start, a free event at Fishy Delishy on Newnham Parade, Cheshunt, on Tuesday 3 November is built for you. Your Business, Powered by AI is a Google Data Centre Community AI Fellowship Basecamp event, with speakers Celia Rizothanasi (CMO, Intelligent Acceleration), Chris Dungate (CEO, Community Alliance Broxbourne and East Herts) and Mary C. Sykes (Corporate Relations, Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce), plus a real restaurant case study. Admission is free but places are limited, so register now if you want a seat.

HEALTH & WELLBEING TIPS
Hours at the screen without a break? Here is what it does to you, and the easy fixes
Tired, sore eyes. Staring at a screen makes you blink less, which leaves eyes dry, strained and blurry by the afternoon. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Neck, shoulder and back pain. Hunching towards a laptop loads your neck and lower back for hours at a time. Raise the screen so the top sits around eye level, keep your feet flat and sit back in your chair.
The cost of sitting still. Long unbroken stretches of sitting are linked to poorer circulation, weight gain and a higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Stand up and move for a few minutes at least once an hour, a walk to the kettle counts.
Aching wrists and hands. Repetitive typing and mouse work with bent wrists can lead to repetitive strain injury. Keep wrists straight, the mouse close to the keyboard, and shake out your hands during breaks.
Headaches, poor focus and bad sleep. Long screen sessions without pauses drain concentration, and screens late at night can make it harder to drop off. Take short breaks away from the screen and switch off for the last hour before bed.
If you use a screen for work, your employer is required to assess your workstation and plan breaks into your day, so ask if that has not happened.
