Happy Friday, Broxbourne! ☀️

Hello October! 🍂
It’s a month full of meaning and momentum—and we’re bringing it all to your inbox. October marks both Black History Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we'll be highlighting some fantastic events and activities happening across Broxbourne and beyond.

Looking ahead to this weekend, there’s something for everyone:
👟 ParkPlay continues at Grundy Park on Saturday, great fun for kids and families.
🎡 If you're after festival vibes, Hoddesdon Town Centre will be buzzing with rides, shows, and a lively atmosphere.
🎭 The Spotlight Theatre in Hoddesdon has a great line-up too, including live music and family pantomimes.
🍺 Fancy a stein? Head over to Hertford Oktoberfest for Bavarian fun.
🗿 Or take a moment for reflection and awareness with the striking Knife Angel sculpture now on display in Welwyn Garden City.

Finally, as we head into the weekend, we pause to reflect on the tragic attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and their community during this painful time.

Stay safe, stay connected—and make the most of your local area this October.

Common Usage & Phrases:

  1. Atone for [something] – most common usage
➤ He tried to atone for his mistakes by volunteering at the shelter.
➤ She atoned for her harsh words with a heartfelt apology.

  2. Make atonement – more formal or religious phrasing
➤ In many faiths, fasting is a way to make atonement for sins.

    Examples in Sentences:

    • He spent years trying to atone for the hurt he caused his family.

    • The company donated millions to atone for environmental damage.

    • On Yom Kippur, Jews seek to atone for their sins through prayer and reflection.

    Origin:

From the phrase "at one" — meaning to be reconciled or in harmony. Originally, to atone meant "to be at one with" someone, especially after a dispute.
