The annual electoral canvass letter is landing now, and ignoring it risks your vote

Households across Broxbourne, East Herts and North Herts are receiving this year's canvass letter checking who's registered at each address. It's a legal requirement every council has to carry out, and if your household doesn't respond, you risk being dropped from the register ahead of the next election. Check your post, follow the instructions on the form (post or online), and confirm your details are correct.

Checked the uniform, now check the car seat before the school run restarts

Car seat safety expert Kat Gemmell of Silver Cross is urging parents to check their child's car seat before term properly gets going, since a seat that fit in July can be outgrown by September. Government rules require a car seat until a child turns 12 or reaches 135cm, and Gemmell's quickest check is fitting two fingers between the child's shoulder and the headrest, plus making sure the seatbelt lies flat and isn't tucked behind the back or under an arm. Build the check into the school-run routine rather than a one-off, since a short familiar journey needs the same care as a long one.

Broxbourne Council's website has an AI assistant, here's what it can actually do

Broxbourne Borough Council is highlighting an AI-powered search tool on its website, nicknamed Bob, that's been there for a while but is easy to miss. It sits alongside the normal search bar and can point you toward the right page for things like bin collections, planning applications and benefits. It won't replace speaking to the council directly for anything complicated, but it's worth a try before you start scrolling.

Broxbourne Council wants local businesses to sponsor its roundabouts

Broxbourne Borough Council is offering local businesses the chance to sponsor advertising space on several roundabouts across the borough, putting a brand in front of hundreds of residents driving past every day. Sites currently available are Monarch's Way/High Street in Waltham Cross, Goffs Lane/Lieutenant Ellis Way in Cheshunt, Mylne Close/Brookfield Centre in Cheshunt, and Ware Road/Duke Street in Hoddesdon. Businesses interested should contact the council's Economic Development team directly.

Applications now open for Emerging TEC, a new business incubator at Theobalds Enterprise Centre

Theobalds Enterprise Centre in Cheshunt has opened applications for Emerging TEC, a new AI and Emerging Technology Incubator aimed at people with a business idea, a startup, or a growing enterprise. The programme launches publicly at the AI Coffee & Conversation event on Friday 18 September, see What's On below. High Court injunction halts unauthorised works on Sheering Mill Lane, Sawbridgeworth

East Herts Council secured an emergency High Court injunction over the August bank holiday weekend after heavy machinery and construction vehicles moved onto land off Sheering Mill Lane without planning permission, following an earlier Temporary Stop Notice that was ignored. An amended injunction was served in the early hours of Monday 31 August after work continued, and police attended the site as those without authorised access left peacefully, with no arrests needed. The council says it will keep working with Hertfordshire Police to monitor the site, and is asking anyone with concerns about further activity there to call 101; a court hearing on whether the injunction was breached is scheduled for Tuesday 15 September.

Marshgate Drive in Hertford is under multi-way signals until October, expect delays

Hertfordshire County Council is carrying out highway improvement works on Marshgate Drive in Hertford, with multi-way traffic signals in place affecting both the footway and carriageway. The works are scheduled to run until Friday 2 October 2026. If Marshgate Drive is part of your regular route, build in extra time or consider an alternative while the signals are up.

Royston Leisure Centre's gym has doubled in size, here's what's new

If you haven't been back to Royston Leisure Centre since the summer, the gym extension is now finished. The refurbished space is more than double its old size, on the site of the former group exercise studio, with new Life Fitness cardio and strength equipment plus a dedicated group exercise studio. It's part of North Herts Council's wider £16.4m project to cut carbon emissions across its leisure centres, part-funded by a £7.74m government grant.
