News from Hertfordshire County Council
New Measures Announced to Help Residents Feel Safer on Hertfordshire's Roads

Hertfordshire County Council has announced continued investment in road safety measures to make the county's roads safer for all users.
The council has earmarked £2.3m for the roll-out of more 20mph zones in 2024/25, as part of a dedicated £7m programme running up to 2024/25. The implementation focuses on areas where 20mph zones are viable, affordable and align with the speed management strategy.
The council previously invested £3m in 20mph zones in 2023/24, with plans for a further £1.7m in 2025/26. According to the council, 20mph areas can improve road safety, create calmer streets and encourage more walking and cycling.
The measures form part of the Hertfordshire Road Safety Partnership, which coordinates infrastructure improvements, education and enforcement across the county.
By the end of 2025, the council expects significant progress in rolling out 20mph zones across suitable areas. The programme represents one of the largest investments in local road safety measures in Hertfordshire's recent history.
For more information, residents can visit the council's website or contact local representatives.
Hertfordshire Faces £50 Million Funding Gap Under Government’s Fair Funding Review

Hertfordshire County Council could be left over £50 million short following the government’s latest funding review, raising serious concerns about cuts to vital services this year.
Council Leader Steve Jarvis has warned that a projected £45-55 million reduction in government grants will significantly impact services, particularly in Adults and Children’s social care and support for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Jarvis has urged Hertfordshire MPs to intervene, stressing that the proposed funding falls short of the county’s growing needs and risks undermining essential improvement work. Without urgent action, the council may be forced to make changes that will affect all residents.
The council is pushing back against the proposals, aiming to protect services and residents from the worst of the cuts.
COMMUNITY UPDATES
Goffs Oak Community Association Charity Donation Announcement
The Goffs Oak Community Association will announce charitable donations from their Summer Fayre proceeds on Friday, August 8th, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the war memorial in Goffs Oak Village.
Three local charities have been selected to receive donations:
Isabel Hospice
Teens Unite Fighting Cancer
Stargardt's Connected
The public ceremony will serve as the official announcement of the donations. The association is inviting community members and media representatives to attend the announcement ceremony, which will publicly recognise both the charitable recipients and acknowledge the community support that generated the donations through the successful June 14th Summer Fayre.
Hoddesdon Library Ready for Summer Holidays
With schools breaking up for summer, Hoddesdon Library has announced an exciting programme of affordable activities to keep local children entertained during the holidays.
Library mascots Jimi and Hank are "summer ready" as the venue prepares to welcome youngsters with a diverse range of events. The programme includes a Giant Summer Storytime with giant bug treasure hunt, a Bug Finding Walk in Barclay Park, and the hugely popular Big LEGO Beach Build.
Children can also enjoy The Hungry Caterpillar craft and story event, combining beloved literature with hands-on activities. The programme concludes with a Bug House Making session in the library's garden, run in partnership with Hertfordshire Zoo.
All activities have limited places, so parents are encouraged to book early. Families can visit the library in person or use QR codes on promotional posters to book online. Full details are available on the library's website.
The comprehensive summer programme demonstrates Hoddesdon Library's commitment to supporting families with affordable, educational entertainment right in the heart of the community.
Our Local MP Making Himself Available to Residents

Lewis Cocking MP
It's encouraging to see our MP Lewis Cocking making a real effort to connect with people right here in Broxbourne. Over recent weeks, he's been running drop-in surgeries at venues like Cheshunt Library and The Prince of Wales in Goffs Oak, giving residents direct access to their representative.
What's particularly impressive is how he's handling healthcare concerns. When local resident Gianni complained about getting GP appointments at the Maple surgery - saying it was "easier to get an appointment at NASA" - Lewis revealed he'd already visited the surgery in December to see the problems firsthand.
After his recent surgery at The Prince of Wales, Lewis committed to "taking several issues back to Parliament to help me push for change nationally."
This is exactly what we need - someone who doesn't just listen but actively works to turn our community concerns into action at Westminster. It's reassuring to know Broxbourne has a voice speaking up for us in Parliament.
Lowewood Museum Invites Families for Summer Discovery
Lowewood Museum is encouraging residents across the borough to explore their extensive collection during the summer holidays, promising "a lot of history exhibits you cannot afford to miss."
The museum is open for exhibitions and galleries every Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4:30pm throughout the holiday period. For families seeking additional activities, special family event days have been scheduled for Wednesday 30th July, and 13th and 20th August.
Adding to the visitor experience, the museum's cafe will be open during operating hours, serving drinks that can be enjoyed either in the comfortable community room or the peaceful museum garden. This creates a relaxing environment where families can take breaks between exploring the historical displays.
The museum's call to borough residents highlights the wealth of local history on display, making it an ideal educational day out that combines learning with family fun during the school holidays.
With regular weekend opening hours and special family-focused events, Lowewood Museum offers another excellent option for families looking to keep children engaged and entertained while discovering the rich heritage of their local area.
Goffs Oak Photography Exhibition Opens at Lowewood Museum

Lowewood Museum is showcasing local heritage through its new "Curated By Goffs Oak" photography exhibition, featuring images from the museum's collection of over 20,000 photographs documenting the Borough of Broxbourne from 1860 to present day.
The exhibition follows the successful "Curated By Wormley and Turnford" displays as part of "Your Heritage, Your Museum," a National Lottery-funded community heritage project. What makes this exhibition special is its community-driven approach - each image has been selected by Goffs Oak residents who have also shared their memories and local knowledge to bring the photographs to life.
The museum has thanked Goffs Oak Community Library and the Goffs Oak Local History Group for their invaluable contributions to the exhibition.
The exhibition is open Fridays and Saturdays, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, with free admission. While the gallery is on the first floor accessible only by stairs, an album of photographs is available to view on the ground floor in the Community Cafe room for accessibility.
