News from Hertfordshire County Council
🗑️ Have Your Say: Changes Coming to Local Recycling Centres
Hertfordshire County Council wants your views on possible changes to local recycling centres.
From 3 October to 28 November 2025, residents can share their thoughts on three new ideas:
stopping commercial traders from using the sites,
adding charges for extra DIY waste, and
no longer taking mixed, unsorted rubbish.
These ideas replace earlier plans (like shorter hours and a booking system) that were dropped after a council leadership change.
Cllr Paul Zukowskyj says the goal is to keep recycling centres running well while staying safe and financially sound. Regular users are especially encouraged to have their say before the council decides in February 2026.
👉 You can join the consultation on the council’s website under “Recycling Centres Consultation.”

Because HR shouldn’t feel like a thankless job. And you shouldn’t feel alone in it.
🚒 17 New Firefighters Begin Training in Hertfordshire
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has just welcomed 17 new firefighter trainees, 12 men and 5 women, who’ve started an intense 16-week training course before graduating in December.
They come from all sorts of backgrounds, police, trades, university, and even some with firefighting families. Over the next few months, they’ll learn everything from firefighting techniques and rescue operations to first aid, water rescues, and hazardous materials handling.
Cllr Ajanta Hilton, who visited the training, praised their dedication. Chief Fire Officer Alex Woodman said the recruits will soon be ready to serve communities across Hertfordshire.
The Fire Service is still hiring, anyone interested can apply through the Hertfordshire County Council jobs portal.
COMMUNITY UPDATES
💡 Big Energy Savings: Broxbourne Residents Could Get Up to £30K in Home Upgrades
Great news for Broxbourne residents, the council is offering up to £30,000 in free home energy upgrades through the government’s Warm Homes Local Grant.
Working with the National Energy Foundation, the scheme covers things like insulation, new heating systems, double glazing, solar panels, and even heat pumps all aimed at cutting your energy bills.
To qualify, your home needs an EPC rating of D–G, and you must either live in an eligible postcode, get means-tested benefits, or earn under £36,000 a year.
Cllr Clune called it “a great chance to save money and make your home warmer.”
Check eligibility at 👉 gov.uk/apply-warm-homes-local-grant
or call 0800 107 0044 (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm) for free advice.
🌸 James Foundation Joins Global ‘Wave of Light’ to Honour Babies Gone Too Soon

The James Foundation charity will take part in this year’s Wave of Light, a global remembrance event honouring babies who have passed away too soon. 🕯️
The charity is inviting families to join in by sharing their babies’ names, which will be added to a special remembrance template as part of the tribute.
“We want to fill this space with light, love, and remembrance,” the Foundation said in a statement.
Anyone wishing to take part can send a direct message or comment on the Foundation’s social media post to have their baby’s name included. The Wave of Light takes place each year on 15 October, when candles are lit around the world to remember precious lives lost.
