Google’s Data Centre Investment: Is River Lea at Risk?

When Google announced its $1bn investment in a new data centre in our very own Hertfordshire earlier this year, it was a moment of celebration. A global tech giant choosing Broxbourne felt like a significant win, bringing high-quality jobs and a boost to our local economy. As Google stated, the facility would power crucial services like Search, Maps, and YouTube while creating engineering jobs, right on our doorstep.

However, amidst the excitement, one important aspect seems to be under-discussed: the environmental impact, particularly water usage.

The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has increased the demand for data centres, and cooling these facilities requires massive amounts of water. For instance, data centres evaporate up to 9 liters of water per kilowatt-hour of energy, and AI’s projected water usage could reach 6.6 billion m³ by 2027.

This is of particular concern to us in Broxbourne, given our proximity to the beloved Lea River, a local treasure. While Google’s commitment to water security sounds promising, the local implications for our water resources remain unclear.

As residents, it’s essential we ask Google some crucial questions as they continue to expand their AI investments in our backyard:

  1. What is Google’s plan for the Lea River next to its facility?

  2. Did the presence of the river influence their decision, and how will they protect the biodiversity around Theobalds and Cheshunt? How will your AI strategy impact water consumption, and how do you plan to replenish the water resources used?

  3. Are you assessing the potential social problems AI investments could create, and will the benefits outweigh them?

  4. How involved is your board in reviewing the social risks and the environmental impact of your AI investments to ensure they align with your ESG goals?

In discussing Google’s investment in a data centre in Broxbourne, curiosity becomes essential. While the economic benefits are exciting, we need to ensure that the environment is not compromised. A local representative(s) should oversee Google’s impact on our waterways to balance progress with sustainability.

Best,
