Good morning {{first_name | Reader}},

As May arrives and the warmer days start to settle in, most of us are thinking about the months ahead, holidays, local events, and time outdoors. But while many are planning this summer, some are already preparing for something much bigger.

Across the world, Scouts are getting ready for the 2027 World Scout Jamboree in Gdańsk, Poland, an international gathering that brings together young people from every corner of the globe. Representing Broxbourne at this event will be Thomas, who is now beginning his journey towards taking part.

In this edition, we’re sharing a closer look at the World Scout Jamboree and introducing Thomas as he prepares for this once in a lifetime experience. You may even feel inspired to support him as he gets ready for Poland.

Thomas goes to Poland

When 160 countries worth of scouts descend on Poland in the summer of 2027, one of the young people in that crowd will have earned his place through something more than enthusiasm. He will have been selected.

Thomas, a member of East Herts Scout Group, was chosen to represent his area at the 2027 World Scout Jamboree after a competitive selection weekend where young people from across the region met as strangers, completed team challenges, and were ranked by their leaders. Only those who made the cut received the email. Thomas was one of them.

What is Scout Jamboree?

The World Scout Jamboree is a premier international Scouting event held every four years, bringing together tens of thousands of youth (ages 14–17) and adult volunteers (International Service Team) for cultural exchange, adventure, and friendship. The 26th World Scout Jamboree will be held from July 30 to August 8, 2027, in Gdańsk, Poland.

The Mad Hatters

Thomas has been placed in Unit 43, the "Mad Hatters," one of two units East Herts is sending. Each unit comprises 36 scouts and four leaders. Across the UK, 3,500 scouts and leaders will make the journey.

The jamboree runs from 30th July to 9th August 2027, with scouts travelling by coach over two to three days each way. From door to door, Thomas will be away for roughly two weeks. During the ten days on site, scouts mix with groups from across the world, trade their neckers (the distinctive neckerchiefs each national team wears), join day trips, and simply talk to people they would never otherwise meet. Thomas has his eye on swapping with a Kenyan unit. A school trip to Kenya was cancelled on him once. This time, he is making it happen on his terms.

What the money pays for, and who else it helps

The total fundraising target for Thomas's place is £3,500. The UK sits in the highest of four funding bands, which means a portion of what Thomas and his family raise goes directly toward reducing the cost for scouts coming from less economically developed countries. The money does not just send one young person to Poland. It helps send others who could not otherwise afford to be there.

Thomas has already started fundraising. A sponsored walk is planned this May, where the unit will walk the equivalent distance to Poland, with sponsors supporting them across the route. There is also a quiz night, community stalls, and a group fundraising event. He is building relationships with local businesses and organisations who want to put their name behind something real.

What sponsors get in return

This is not a passive donation. Thomas is willing to speak to any business or community organisation before the jamboree about what he is doing and why, and to come back afterwards to report on what he experienced and learned. If you want your business associated with a young person doing something genuinely meaningful in your community, this is that opportunity.
